Holyhead Santa Richard Burnell is Ynys Môn MP Virginia Crosbie’s February Hidden Hero for his years of community and entertainment work on the island.
Richard has been vice-chair of Holyhead Maritime Museum for many years but is best known for his annual turn as the island’s most celebrated Father Christmas bringing cheer to children.
Richard started off in the role when a local Brownie group said they wanted a real Santa with a real white beard.
Then the local Round Table asked for his services too and the rest is history.
“Richard has been absolutely brilliant in his role as the island’s Santa. He always brings festive cheer and happiness wherever he goes,” said Virginia.
“I got to know him well on the trip to Greystones, Ireland before Christmas and he was a brilliant ambassador for Holyhead. I know he will be a popular choice as my Hidden Hero this month, not just for his Santa work but also for his unstinting dedication to the Maritime Museum too."
Richard, who is celebrating his 60thwedding anniversary this year, said:
“I am honoured and humbled to receive this award from Virginia. “I have always said it's not about the individual. I'm just the front man as Santa. There are a lot of people involved in the Santa festivities and I thank them for their support and for every opportunity I have to make local people smile.”
