Ynys Môn MP Virginia Crosbie stepped in at the last minute to join a football tournament after Amlwch ladies team found themselves a woman down.
Virginia was initially at the seven-a-side tournament on Saturday as a spectator as she sponsors Amlwch Football Club, and has previously raised over £4,100 for it from a gala dinner.
However, she was told the side only had six players and was asked to put on a kit and play.
The team was competing against Llandudno, Pwllheli, Llangefni A, Llangefni B, Rhyl 1879 A, Rhyl 1879 B, Bangor 1876, Bangor Under-19’s and Trearddur Bay.
Amlwch won 4, lost 4 and drew 1. Llandudno were the eventual winners.
“I have to say it was a deep end moment for me as my football skills are really non-existent but I think it’s every supporter’s dream to go onto the field of play and help the team. I was no different and just couldn’t say no,” said Virginia.
“My teammates were magnificent, helping me out, encouraging me and being incredibly nice when I basically mucked it up.
“It was a brilliant tournament and everyone was just great with the football at a higher standard than I could ever manage. I think I will hang up my boots now and stick to tennis!”
Captain of Amlwch Town Ladies Carol Lewis said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Virginia to our first tournament for several years on Saturday.
“Virginia has been a strong supporter of our club and as a thank you it was nice to let her wear the kit and experience the pleasure of playing for the Town – fair play to Virginia for taking part!”
Llandudno Ladies FC said “We really enjoyed the tournament hosted by Amlwch on Saturday and it was great to see Virginia Crosbie MP not only to support the team but stepping in to actually play when Amlwch were short of players and getting on the pitch for a game or two.”
