I met up with the island’s Pass Wide and Slow campaign that works to limit accidents and injuries between horses, carriages and motor vehicles.
Now the summer season is about to start more vehicles will be on Anglesey’s roads and they need to pass two metres away from a horse at 10mph.
I caught up with campaigner Gerri Swift in Llantrisant last Thursday to discuss the campaign and to shoot a video about how drivers can deal with carriages and traps.
Gerri has been involved with horses for 50 years. By riding, driving and walking out as a highly visible group on the island, Gerri and her fellow horse riders hope to help people to understand why they must Pass Wide and Slow.
Making sure horse riders are safe on Ynys Môn’s is very important and Gerri is just a superb campaigner that is making a difference.
I am delighted to support the campaign and do everything I can to help. Now visitors are starting to arrive, more education and more awareness of Pass Wide and Slow is really important and that’s why I came along to do my bit and shoot a video.
Let’s hope we can have a horse and car accident-free summer here on the island.
Gerri said: “Please, when you see a horse on the road, slow down. Whether you are coming towards it, or approaching from behind, slow down.
“Look for signals from the person leading, riding, driving. When it is safe, pass at 10mph, as wide as possible – two metres ideally.
“That person is someone's family. The horse is a beloved friend. Please don't leave a ghost behind for want of a short wait.”
