Residents visited the Menai Suspension Bridge Community Meeting on Friday, that was instigated by myself, to hear an update by the contractors on the repair works.
Around 40 local people went to the Menai Heritage Museum to be briefed by UK Highways A55 Ltd who are undertaking the work on the historic structure ahead of its bicentennial celebrations in 2026.
Those who went were told about how long the works are likely to take and what exactly is involved. There was also a 3D model of the bridge on show and an A5 bilingual handout summarising the works.
A55 is replacing 168 hangers on the bridge. Earlier this month, 26 had been replaced.
Many thanks to all those who took the time to come and get an important update on how the work is going to repair the bridge.
I first asked for a community event months ago and I am so pleased that UK Highways A55 Ltd has worked with me to deliver it.
It was also interesting to hear feedback on the need for a third Menai crossing and local views on the bicentenary celebrations for the bridge.
I visited the bridge myself recently and I can confirm work is on schedule with the single lane restriction on the bridge due to end in February 2025.
The crossing is expected to fully reopen in September 2025 with the weight restriction removed and then we should be all systems go to celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2026.
