Former Roadking employees thank Ynys Môn MP for their HMRC career opportunities

Ynys Môn MP Virginia Crosbie has met up with former Roadking workers now employed at the HMRC Inland Border Facility to talk about how it has given them much better career opportunities.

Virginia donned her hi-vis jacket to visit the fully operational facility in Holyhead recently and speak to some of the 200 plus people – many of them local – who are now employed there.

The MP was instrumental in persuading the HMRC to locate the facility on Anglesey and employ local people with special consideration given to those who worked at Roadking when it closed to become the IBF.

She talked with one of the site’s security guards Corrine Cargill who said: “I worked at Roadking for over two years as a cleaner and I loved it because the team was fantastic.  When we heard we were being made redundant I was gutted.

“When HMRC came to speak to us and said they would find jobs for those who wanted them I thought it was just an empty promise.  But they kept their word and all their contractors were told to prioritise redundant Roadking staff for jobs.

“Môn CF supported me to retrain as a security guard last October and Mitie then offered me a job on their security team at the IBF.

“Most of the old Roadking team work at the IBF too so although we all have different jobs for different contractors, we’ve kept our “family” together.

“I am better paid than I was, my job is more secure and I’m doing work that I never dreamt I would be able to do so close to my hometown.”

Virignia added: “It was really great to catch up with the Roadking crew and to see quite clearly how this investment in Holyhead has changed circumstances for them and many other local people.

“I was inspired by Corinne’s story and really humbled to hear how it has made such a huge difference to her and to many others who now have good long-term jobs.

“My priority is still to bring even more investment and jobs to our island. I won’t stop until I do and I am delighted I was able to do my bit to get these jobs placed here on Anglesey.”
