Ynys Môn MP Virginia Crosbie has made Anglesey’s cat rescue champion Vanessa Williams her Hidden Hero for May.
Vanessa started Anglesey & District Feline Support & Rescue (ADFSR) in 2017 when her friend found five feral kittens at Soldier’s Point in Holyhead and asked if she could help.
She obtained some humane traps and caught the kittens and their mother. This was the start of her journey to heading up a fully-fledged rescue centre staffed by dedicated and unpaid volunteers.
ADFSR, based in Llynfaes, is the only cat rescue service on the island. It provides a service to the community by offering a safe space for both feral and abandoned cats and kittens, with a view to neutering and rehoming them.
Since 2017, it has rehomed over 400 cats and kittens.
“Many congratulations to Vanessa, who is the deserved winner of this month’s Hidden Hero award,” said Virginia.
“She has made a huge difference to the welfare of cats and kittens on Anglesey and made sure they are brought back to health and found loving homes when the alternative could well have been injury or death.”
Vanessa said: “I feel humbled and honoured to be nominated as a Hidden Hero as it acknowledges the incredible effort made by myself, the team, and the volunteers and supporters who all help in the running of ADFSR.
“We rely solely on donations from our kind supporters to help pay for food bills. veterinary bills and the general costs of running the rescue. All volunteers, including myself, are unpaid.”
